Why Tennis Is The Perfect Workout

DATE: February 22, 2016

If you’re looking for the perfect workout, grab your racket and head to the courts for a couple of sets of tennis.  It’s actually one of the best total body workouts.

Here at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa on Sanibel Island we know all about the game of tennis. But don’t just take our word for it.

“It’s a high-intensity interval training workout that burns between 400 and 1,000 calories an hour,” said Mark Kovacs, a performance physiologist who serves as executive director of the International Tennis Performance Association. “Tennis play uses nearly every muscle in the body.”

That means tennis benefits your upper body, lower body and core muscles. If you play tennis two to three times a week, you can boost coordination and stamina, as well as your balance, flexibility, speed and agility.

As you head to the courts to work on your serve and better your game, remember these tennis tips:

  • Make Sure You Warm Up: Before playing, do five to 10 minutes of jogging to prime your heart and lungs for all the running and bouncing you will do. Next, do some walking lunges to get your legs ready and some standing twist stretches to help your torso. Follow this with some backstroke movements in the air to get your shoulders in good shape.
  • Bend Those Knees: Don’t forget to bend your knees as you play. This is very important as it generates power for your stroke. Practice your knee bend for ground strokes and serves.
  • Take Care of Your Feet: Make sure you wear the proper tennis shoes. Get a pair that is made just for tennis. This can help provide the needed support for your heels and prevent ankle injuries.
  • Pick Your Court Carefully: You’ll want to stick to softer courts if you can. We couldn’t’ agree more with this one. That’s why Sundial offers six HydroGrid® clay courts for its guests to play on.
