Sundial and Sanibel Island Think Green is Good

DATE: May 29, 2013

By now, most people are at least aware of the Green, or eco-friendly, movement. On Sanibel Island, it really is all about preserving the natural landscape. More than 60% of the island is dedicated conservation land!

In addition to land set aside for conservation, Sanibel Island has put in place other development restrictions to minimize the human impact on the land. Here are a few examples:

  • Zero streetlights
  • Limit on building height to not exceed ‘the tallest palm tree’
  • Curfew for outdoor lights on beachfront businesses to avoid interfering with sea turtle nesting

Sundial has also been working hard to do their part in implementing Green initiatives. One such example is their “Keeping US Green, Saves YOU Green” promotion. This deal offers any guest the opportunity to save an extra 5% on their nightly rate just by opting out of daily housekeeping services (thereby conserving water and other resources). The resort’s food and beverage department also makes sure to locally source whatever ingredients they can, decreasing its carbon footprint.

There’s plenty you can do, too. Whether at home or visiting the island, try riding a bike next time you’re just making a short errand. Not only will you save on gas, but you’ll skip the traffic, won’t have to search for a parking spot, and it’s great exercise! Simple things, like reusable water bottles, choosing high efficiency appliances and light bulbs (when you have to get new ones) and reminding your kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room, also make a difference. Kermit may have thought it wasn’t easy, but here on Sanibel Island and at Sundial Beach Resort and Spa, it IS easy being Green.
