Being an avid bicyclist on an island filled with trails, I was happy to discover that next month is the official National Bike Month. According the League of American Bicyclists:

“Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.”

I think May is the perfect month for this! Weather is warming up everywhere and the great outdoors are calling. When I was growing up, a bike was pretty much a bike. Nowadays, there are so many different varieties – from beach cruisers to mountain bikes to fixed gear and track bikes – it’s hard to not find one that suits your particular needs.

In honor of bike month, here are my tips to finding the perfect bike for you.

Basic Bike Types:

While there are plenty more bike types out there, I thought it best to focus on the three most popular styles for the average person.

Road Bikes = Urban

Best for: Pavement.

Bike Month - Road bike

Mountain Bikes = Rural

Best for: Dirt or rocky trails and gravel roads; OK for pavement too (with tire change).

Bike Month - Mountain bike

Cruisers = Fun

Best for: Relaxed riding on flat terrain.

No question about it, Sanibel is a cruisers paradise! Miles of beach and endless bike trails allow for plenty of bonding time for you and you bike.
