What I’m Thankful For…

DATE: November 21, 2013

Growing up, my family had a Thanksgiving tradition where everyone at the table had to stand up and say three things they were thankful for that year. Originally, the practice had a more serious tone. However, a few years into the tradition, this practice was partially thrown out the window due to half a dozen very vocal children of varying ages. I dare you to keep a straight face when your 4-year-old cousin announces that he is thankful for his mommy and daddy, Super Man and the tooth fairy for leaving him $50 “because that tooth was a real mother to get out.” Of course the only person not amused by this statement was my uncle, who now has a significantly lighter wallet due to playing tooth fairy without his glasses. From that point on, it was decided that only one of the three had to be serious (this is where I got the idea for the “I’m Thankful For…” bowl mentioned in my last post).

My husband and I have continued this tradition with our own children and they continue to come up with more and more unique answers every year. They’ve given answers ranging from new toys to Halloween candy to the babysitter who “let’s them stay up late and watch scary movies” (following this proclamation we had to have a chat with said babysitter).

Regardless of the answers, the annual Thanksgiving proclamations have become the best part of the holiday. These small summations of each of our lives that year provide us a way to quickly reconnect with the people we see only a few times a year. It allows the two sides of the family to come together without the pressure of coming up with small talk topics and serves as an icebreaker for new additions to the family.

I’ve already decided what my three things will be this year. I am thankful for:

  1. The health and happiness of my friends and family.
  2. The potty training years being well behind me.
  3. DVR because there is no better show to work out to than Scandal!

What are you thankful for?
